How to Increase the Temperature Differential of a Thermostat

Home heating systems use thermostats to regulate temperature levels. When room temperatures fall below the set level by one degree, the furnace circuit energizes. The temperature differential is the difference between the actual room temperature and the furnace thermostat setting, which is adjustable. For example, if you want the furnace to turn on at two degrees below the preset level instead of one, the controls are designed to allow you to alter the factory setting. You can increase the temperature differential on your thermostat with basic do-it-yourself ability.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the control panel on your thermostat. Typically, a cover is used to conceal the panel.

    • 2

Press the up (/\) and down (\/) buttons on the panel. Hold the buttons down together until you see “Differential 1st” appear on the display screen.

    • 3

Press the up button to increase the temperature differential.

    • 4

Release the button. The screen will return to the temperature display in a few seconds.
