How to Clean Out the Tubes on My York Heat Exchanger

A heat exchanger from York heats air and distributes it through the home ductwork system. During the heat making process, a lot of condensate is made and drained through the drain line in the system. The drain line runs from the top of the system, down a PVC drain line and out of the home. Algae will build up within the line over time if it is not cleaned out regularly, which prevents the system from draining.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off power to the unit at the electrical mains.

    • 2

Open the access panel at the front of the main unit using a screwdriver. Pull the panel off the front of the unit.

    • 3

Locate the condensate drain lines underneath the heat exchange motor. Find the access plug and pull it open.

    • 4

Pour a cup of diluted bleach into each of the drain lines to kill any algae.

    • 5

Locate the end of the drain line outside the home. Remove the paper filter from a wet/dry vacuum. Place the hose of the vacuum over the drain tube. Cover the end of the hose with a rag and turn on the vacuum for a few seconds to suck all the killed algae out of the line.

Pour a second cup of bleach into the condensate drain line. Close up the unit and turn the power back on.
