How to Adjust the Ducts on a House Air Conditioner

The ducts in household central air conditioning systems contain adjustable dampers to regulate airflow through different sections of the house. Adjusting the ducts help manage energy usage while maximizing the efficiency of the air conditioning system. By widening the dampers in ductwork to the second story, for example, you can increase cooling air flow to the upper level and address the problem of rising heat. This helps balance the overall house temperature so the upper rooms are not unbearably hot, while the first floor is uncomfortably cold.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the wall thermostat mode to air conditioning. Adjust the thermostat lower until the heat pump or center AC unit switches on.

    • 2

Go to the first floor, the basement or wherever the rectangular ductwork connects to the HVAC unit indoors. Look for the tube ducts above the rectangular ductwork. Each tube is equipped with a metal rod extending from one side with a wing nut on the end.

    • 3

Use a screwdriver to turn the slot on the end of the metal rod clockwise until it is parallel with the round duct. This is the fully open position, allowing maximum airflow through that particular tube duct.

    • 4

Turn the slot in the metal rod counterclockwise until it is perpendicular to the tube duct in order to close the duct completely.
