How to Cover Round Air Ducts With Insulation

A lot of cold and warm air can be lost to the inside of your walls through uninsulated duct work. Covering your ducts with insulation is just one part of making your home more energy efficient. Take the time to measure the duct work, check it for any gaps or other holes and then insulate it well. If you have specific concerns, however, consult a heating and cooling specialist.

Instructions

    • 1

Select an insulating duct sleeve from your local home improvement store that meets your needs. These are generally made of fiberglass or foam insulation and are made to slide over your round duct work.

    • 2

Measure the length of the duct work with a tape measure. If possible, have a friend assist you.

    • 3

Lay the insulation out and cut it to the length(s) you need with a pair of scissors or sharp knife.

    • 4

Slide the insulation sleeve over the duct work until it covers the area you want insulated.

    • 5

Join any seams in the sleeves with foil tape, and tape the loose ends to the duct work with the foil tape. If you find that your insulation is slightly shorter than the duct work, or a little bit larger in circumference, you may want to tape the ends down to the pipe.
