How to Replace a V-Shaped Blower Compartment Furnace Filter

Most down-flow type of furnaces have two filters that form a V shape above the blower in the blower compartment. The filters sit in a single V-shaped channel above the blower and are usually out of sight. This type of filter arrangement requires a bit more maneuvering than when working with other varieties. Some furnace manufacturers use a cleanable filter, while others use filters that require replacement. When installing a V-shaped blower compartment furnace filter, ensure that the arrows on the sides of the filters point toward each other.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the circuit breaker to the furnace and open the blower compartment access panel. Some access panels simply lift up and away from the unit, while others have a couple of screws that require a Phillips screwdriver or nut driver.

    • 2

Reach inside the blower compartment and grab the left-side filter. The filters are above the blower wheel in a small channel. Tilt the top of the left-side filter toward the center of the furnace. Lift it up slightly and pull the bottom toward the left side of the compartment. Once the bottom of the filter clears the blower, pull it down alongside the blower and out of the furnace.

    • 3

Grab the right-side filter and tip the top of the filter toward the center of the furnace. Lift up the filter slightly and remove it just as you did the left-side filter. The bottom of the filter should come down first.

    • 4

Hold one new filter upright with the arrow pointing to the left, and slide it between the blower and left side of the furnace. Lift it above the blower, and place the bottom of the filter into the filter channel. Push the top of the filter over to the right side of the furnace.

    • 5

Repeat the installation process with the second filter, except hold it with the arrow pointing to the right. Once the filter is in the channel, pull the top of the filter toward the left side of the furnace.

    • 6

Install the blower compartment access panel and turn on the power to the furnace.
