Sealing Around Air Conditioners in the Ceiling

Seal around your ceiling air conditioner to help your air conditioner perform more efficiently, creating a cooler home with a lower utility bill. Air leaks from poor insulation or construction typically allow more escaped air than drafts from windows or doors. Sealing the nooks and crannies in your ceiling can help keep your cool air inside your home, preventing your ceiling air conditioner from working harder only to lose the cool air to leaks around the unit.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the air conditioning unit and all of the ducts in the attic. Reconnect and seal any disconnected ducts, and insulate the connections with foam sealant.

    • 2

Use insulating foam sealant to seal where the ducts connect to the HVAC boot that goes into your home as well as around the boots in the drywall.

    • 3

Remove the vents from the ceiling to inspect the metal box that delivers the air to each room. If there is a gap between the metal box and the ceiling, clean it and fill it with a high quality silicone caulk or piece of rubber weatherstripping. Replace the vents.
