How to Replace the Fan on a Rheem 10 SEER Heat Pump

The Rheem 10 SEER is an electric heat pump. The heat pump contains a motor and fan pump visible from the top of the unit, which mounts outdoors near the building. The fan prop is designed to detach from the motor shaft so the fan can be replaced if any of the blades bend or break. This is a less expensive repair than replacing the entire fan and motor assembly.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the heat pump by pulling the lever on the circuit breaker for the unit to the "Off" position. This breaker is typically a separate box from the main household breakers.

    • 2

Remove the bolts in the edges of the square or round grate on the top of the Rheem with a nut driver. Wear work gloves to protect your hands from the metal edges as you lift the grate off the heat pump. The fan is immediately below the grate.

    • 3

Twist the metal nut at the center of the fan prop counterclockwise with the adjustable wrench to loosen and remove the nut. Pull off the fan prop by the center spindle. The fan blades are sharp enough to cut skin so use work gloves.

    • 4

Center the new fan prop over the spindle sticking up from the motor to lower the fan in place.

    • 5

Twist the nut onto the spindle where it emerges through the center of the fan prop. Tighten it with the adjustable wrench.

    • 6

Put the cover grate on the Rheem and secure with bolts through the holes in the edges. Tighten each bolt with the nut driver.

    • 7

Raise the circut breaker lever to the "On" position.
