How to Wire a York Heat Pump Thermostat

The purpose of a thermostat on a York heat pump is to maintain the temperature inside your house at a comfortable level. The thermostat does this by sending signals to the heat pump for when to start and when to stop. York has a number of different thermostat models, including a touch screen that operates similarly to a cell phone. You can wire a York heat pump thermostat yourself using a few simple items from your toolbox.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the York heat pump at the main circuit breaker.

    • 2

Separate the two halves of the York thermostat by pressing the tab on the bottom of the unit and pulling it apart.

    • 3

Take the rear of the unit and feed the thermostat wires through the opening in the back. Press the back of the York thermostat up against the wall until it's flush with the wall surface. Place a level on top of the rear plate and adjust the plate until it's level. Use a pencil to mark through the mounting holes on the rear of the plate onto the wall. Set the plate aside.

    • 4

Drill through the marker holes with a 3/16-inch drill bit. Tap anchors into the holes with a hammer.

    • 5

Replace the thermostat panel on the wall, feeding the cord through the back of the panel first. Hold the back of the thermostat in place while securing it with screws.

    • 6

Connect the heat pump wires to the terminals inside the thermostat using a screwdriver. Configurations will differ, depending on the York model. In most heat pump installations there will be at least three wires containing the connections for the heat pump: a transformer connection, a fan relay and a heating relay. There may also be another wire for power to the thermostat unit. In general, most York heat pumps will use the following wiring colors: red for the heat pump transformer, green for the fan relay, white for the heating terminal relay and black for the power. Two of the easiest to install thermostats are the York LX Thermostat and THE Thermostat. For these two York thermostats, connect the terminals as follows: the R terminal is for the heat pump transformer wire, the G terminal is for the fan relay and the W terminal is for the heating relay.

Install any batteries into the York, if necessary.

    • 8

Snap the front of the unit into place. Restore the power at the main circuit breaker.
