How to Hook Up Your Furnace Vents

Furnace ducts and vents connect a home’s heating and cooling system to its interior living spaces. The proper hook-up of room vents helps ensure living spaces receive adequate amounts of airflow. Each room vent connects to a duct line that runs from the main heating and cooling unit. Room vent sizes may vary depending on the size of the incoming duct line.

Instructions

Measure the length and width of each room’s duct openings to determine the vent sizes needed. The size listed on a vent corresponds with the size of the intended duct opening, so no additional calculations are needed to match vent size to duct openings.

    • 2

Slide the furnace vent into the duct opening hole. Unevenly cut openings may require a different-sized vent depending on how far off the dimensions are. In some cases, it may be possible to round down to the next available vent size to get a better fit.

Secure the furnace vents inside the duct openings with screws. Position the vent over the top of the duct opening, and drill ¾-inch holes at each corner of the vent so that the holes go through the floorboard. Use ¾-inch Phillips washer tap screws to secure the vent to the floor.

Check to make sure vent doors open and close properly. Tight vent doors may indicate an improper fit or may simply need lubricating.
