How to Use Wood Flour to Stop Condenser Leaks

Plugging leaks with wood flour is a trick used in boilers, air conditioner units and other machines that have a cooling system. For home use, the wood flour trick works on air conditioning systems with condensers. The wood chips are finely ground flour that will get sucked into a hole and plug it as the wood swells. This is a temporary fix; it will either need repair or need to be repeated. However, it works in a pinch and can keep the machine running.

Instructions

    • 1

Moisten the wood flour with an equal amount of water right before you inject it. Do not let it sit and expand before you inject it or it won't create a tight seal. For example, use 1 cup of wood flour with 1 cup of water.

    • 2

Inject the solution into the water intake on the unit. Use a syringe, baster or other tool to inject the wood flour.

    • 3

Turn the machine on and allow the wood flour to cycle through. It can take several hours for the wood flour to get sucked into the hole, expand and properly seal the leak. Collect any dripping water in a container.

      Repeat the process as necessary.
