How to Repair Clay Flue Liners in Fireplaces

Clay flue liners are essentially clay tiles that cover the brick work inside a normal chimney or fireplace. These clay tiles are subject to cracking over the years, and once they are compromised in this way, gas and heat will escape and weaken the chimney proper. Clay tiles that have cracked near the top can be hammered out and easily replaced with new tiles, but deteriorated flue liner tiles along the rise of the chimney need to be repaired by lining the entire flue with a stainless steel chimney liner. There is no other do-it-yourself repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of your chimney flue. The stainless steel flue liner comes in various diameters, one of which will conform to the measurement of your chimney flue for a solid and snug fit.

    • 2

Attach a heavy-duty rope to the pointed flex puller cap and screw it onto the stainless steel flue pipe.

    • 3

Carry the pipe, with rope attached, up to the chimney. Drop the rope down the chimney and have a second person grab it.

    • 4

Slowly lower the steel flue liner into the chimney, with a person inside, by the fireplace, holding the rope to guide it down.

    • 5

Push the chimney liner down the chimney at the same time the person at the bottom pulls on the rope. When the liner is all the way down to the fireplace, attach the flue liner cap to the chimney with some self-tapping screws, the correct drill bit and a battery powered drill. This will prevent the liner from falling down the chimney.

    • 6

Attach the liner to the back of your fireplace air box. Use the supplied clamps and a screwdriver. Push the air box back into place within the fireplace.

    • 7

Trim the flue liner at the top if needed using tin snips. You will unscrew the cap to do this and once trimmed, attach the collar, the top plate and the cap.
