Turn off the circuit breaker to the house to make the wiring safe to handle.
Pull the cover off of the old thermostat to expose the controls and mounting screws.
Remove the screws on either side of the control panel and pull the controller away from the wall.
Wrap a piece of masking tape around each wire that is connected to the controller. Mark each tab with the corresponding color code marked on the controller. Do not mark the color of the wire itself, as the wiring may be different from the controller code. For example, if the blue wire is connected with the slot marked "Green," mark the wire as "Green." If you are installing a new controller with a new fireplace, consult the fireplace wiring diagram for the proper color codes.
Loosen the screws holding the wires into the controller and pull the wires out. For new installations, thread the wires through the drywall to the controller location.
Place the mounting bracket from the Honeywell controller against the wall with the wiring threaded through the center hole. Use a level to make sure the bracket is straight against the wall. Mark the holes for the mounting screws through the mounting holes.
Drill 3/16-inch holes into the marks and then tap drywall anchors into the holes using a hammer.
Place the bracket against the wall again and secure it using two screws that fit into the drywall anchors.
Place the marked wires into the corresponding slot. For example, place the wire marked "green" into the slot marked "green" or "g." Secure the wires in place using a screwdriver.
Place the control unit cover over the bracket and snap it into place. Turn on the circuit breaker and test the Honeywell controller for functionality.
