How to Reinstall a Fireplace Damper

Dampers are an important addition to a fireplace. They prevent the loss of cold air through the chimney when it is not in use and they can control how much heat goes into the home. If you have removed a chimney damper, it's important to reinstall it to save heating costs. Reinstalling the damper is easier than getting a new damper because it already fits the chimney.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Clip the hook into the center of the damper using the pin that comes with it.

    • 2

Feed the coated, wire cord through the hook and crimp the ends.

    • 3

Attach the handle using an Allen wrench.

    • 4

Paint construction adhesive around the edge of the chimney and press the damper in place with the cord dangling down the chimney.

    • 5

Pull the cord taut through the fireplace.

    • 6

Hold the bracket so it is plumb with the fireplace and mark two pilot holes through the screw holes in the bracket. Position the bracket on the inside, left of the fireplace for right-handed use and on the right side for left-handed use.

    • 7

Lower the bracket and drill each hole deep enough to accommodate the screws.

    • 8

Hold the bracket up over the holes and tap concrete anchors through each hole.

    • 9

Loosen the handle on the edge of the cord with the Allen key and attach the chain to the cord. Tighten the handle in place so that it is open when the handle is pressed up against the bracket, and closed when the chain is drawn down and hooked through the handle.
