How to Install the Stove Door Rope on an Airtight Stove

Modern wood burning stoves rely on their door gaskets to make an airtight seal. Stove door ropes wear and change shape over time and with frequent use. Air leaking into an airtight wood stove allows fires to burn hotter and quicker, reducing combustion efficiency. Heat-resistant adhesives secure the door rope to the channel in the door. This adhesive also fails over time and with repeated use. Removing and installing a new door rope keeps an airtight wood stove safe and operating correctly.

  1. Wood Stove Door Rope Installation

    • 1

Remove the airtight stove door from the stove, and place it on a dry, flat surface.

    • 2

Remove the old door rope gasket by pulling on one end.

    • 3

Scrape existing adhesive from the door rope gasket area with a scraper or straight blade screwdriver. Remove as much adhesive as possible.

    • 4

Apply adhesive to the door rope channel in an even bead.

Starting in one corner, place the door rope into the adhesive. Continue placing the door rope around the channel until it meets the other end of the rope. Excess door rope should be cut to fit using scissors.
