Oiling Instructions for the Seth Thomas Grandfather Clock

Seth Thomas has been manufacturing grandfather clocks since 1806. Like many grandfather clocks, a Seth Thomas clock is known for exquisite craftsmanship and reliability, lasting for many years. The long life of a Seth Thomas is not without work on your part. You must maintain a Seth Thomas clock to ensure it functions properly. This includes periodic oiling of its components.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the front case of your Seth Thomas grandfather clock and lift the pendulum up and off the unit. Use a microfiber cloth to grip the pendulum, as you don't want oils from your hands on it. When removed, the rear plate containing the clock mechanism will be exposed.

    • 2

Touch all the levers on the clock mechanism lightly. Levers that move freely are gravity driven and don't require oiling.

    • 3

Use the dropper included in the clock oil kit to add droplets of oil to the levers that are not gravity driven.

    • 4

Apply a drop of oil to each pivot point on the gears and wheels of the mechanism.

    • 5

Replace the pendulum and close the case.
