How to Fix a Frozen Shut Garage Door

During the winter, you may know that your car door can freeze shut, but you may not realize your garage door can do the same thing. If water gets under the door and the temperature sinks below freezing, you may find that when you go to open your garage door, it will not budge. Freeing your garage door from the grip of ice takes some time and patience, but it can be done.

Things You'll Need

  • Low table or bench

Instructions

    • 1

Place a space heater on a low table or bench inside your garage. Position it near the garage door and turn it on. The space heater helps melt the ice more quickly.

    • 2

Scrape any large chunks of ice away from the bottom of the garage door with an ice scraper.

    • 3

Slide a butter or putty knife between the gasket of the garage door and the ground, wiggling it back and forth to remove any ice. The seal between a garage door and the ground is not solid, and under normal circumstances, a thin blade should slide under the door easily.

    • 4

Continue working the knife blade between the garage door and the ground until the door is entirely free. At this point, the garage door can be opened.
