How to Replace Piping That Holds Glass Inside Frame of Shower Door

The rubber piping that holds the glass in the frame of a shower door serves the purpose of providing a seal. Without the seal, the glass door would leak water on the bathroom floor and cause damage. Over time the piping can deteriorate and will need to be replaced in order to maintain an effective seal on the door. You can purchase replacement piping for your glass shower door at most hardware or home improvement stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Pry out the old piping using a putty knife, beginning in a corner and working you way around the door. As you pry out sections of the piping, pull as much out with your hand as you can. Continue using the combination of the putty knife and your hand until all the piping has been removed.

    • 2

Clean the edge of the door where you removed the old piping using mineral spirits and a clean rag. Remove as much debris and old caulking as you can.

    • 3

Fit the new piping along the door's edge without silicone at first to ensure the size. Cut the piping to the correct size using a utility knife. Set the piping aside.

    • 4

Cut the tip of the nozzle of a tube of silicone caulking at a 45-degree angle and poke the foil at the bottom of the tube with the metal rod connected to the caulk gun. Insert the caulking tube into the caulk gun and push the plunger into the back of the tube and turn it 180 degrees. Press the release button.

    • 5

Lay the flat part of the cutoff caulk tube nozzle against the door where the piping is being installed. Pull the trigger as you slowly move the caulk gun around the entire perimeter of the door to place an even bead of caulk.

    • 6

Press the piping in place into the bead of caulk starting in a corner and working your way around the door until the entire length of piping has been installed. Wipe off any excess caulk using a rag dampened with mineral spirits. Allow the caulk to dry for 36 hours before using the shower.
