How to Repair Minor Cracks in a Block Wall With Caulk in a Garage

Cracks in the exterior wall of your garage allow energy to escape and dirt in. They also provide entry points for bugs and other vermin. Repairing minor cracks in block walls is a straightforward process that requires a cartridge of caulk or a roll of rope caulk. The job can be completed in a few minutes, and the protection lasts up to 20 years. Wait for a dry, sunny day to caulk cracks so that the caulk will completely cure and you will not seal moisture inside the garage.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a putty knife to chisel off any existing caulk, crumbling mortar or paint from the area you plan to caulk. This provides a clean surface for the caulk, which will improve adhesion.

    • 2

Apply the caulk in a smooth, even line, completely filling the crack. If you are using a cartridge, release the handle before pulling the cartridge gun away from the crack. If using rope caulk, use your fingers to firmly press the caulk into the crack.

    • 3

Run your moistened finger across the caulk to create a smooth, seamless line.

    • 4

Check the caulk after it is completely dry. Some caulks shrink as they dry, and you may find the cracks are not completely sealed. If so, patch any remaining openings with an additional application of caulk.
