How to Cut Out Notches for Door Hinges

Many types of door hinges are available. Some of them simply attach to doors via screws. Other hinges attach via screws, but require a recessed area in which to fit a portion of the hinge. If you intend to install one of these hinges in your door, you are going to need to cut the recess in the door. This can be done on your own even if you aren't a handyman.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your door on a sturdy work space. Make sure you have access to the side of the door. Locate the area on the side of the door where you would like to mount the hinge. Ideally, a hinge should be 10 inches from the top of the door and another one should be 10 inches from the bottom of the door.

    • 2

Place the hinge over the area you intend to mount it and mark the dimensions of the recessed portion of the hinge on the door.

    • 3

Chisel the marked area of the side of the door with a sharp chisel. Hammer the chisel with your hammer to chip away at the wood.

Continue to chisel the wood until you can fit the recessed portion of the hinge inside.
