My Thermofoil Cabinet Doors Are Peeling

Laminate cabinets are cost-effective choices for kitchens or bathrooms. The lightweight material comes prefinished in various colors matching any décor. One type laminate material used on cabinets is Thermofoil. While the material lasts for long periods, cabinets sometimes peel along the edges from everyday use.
  1. Thermofoil Description

    • Thermofoil is a synthetic material for covering particleboard. Commonly used for cabinets, the material contains a laminate that produces a sleek and shiny texture. The company manufactures cabinets with flexible or rigid vinyl films.

    Fixing Peeling Thermofoil

    • In time, Thermofoil cabinets begin peeling along the top or bottom edges. When this happens, glue the peeling material down. Use contact cement from your local home improvement store. Apply a small amount to the Thermofoil’s back, press and smooth it down onto the cabinet surface. When peeling occurs on the cabinet’s front, or it peels and breaks off, repainting the cabinets fixes the problem. Peel the remaining finish off the cabinets, sand the cabinets removing the glossy sheen and then apply primer and latex paint.

    Thermofoil Avantages

    • Thermofoil cabinets are generally less expensive than are solid-wood cabinets. You can have the appearance of wood-stained or painted cabinets without any uneven paintbrush strokes. Cleaning the laminate material is easy with warm, soapy water. These cabinets last a long time and stay in good shape with the proper care.

    Thermofoil Disadvantages

    • The Thermofoil material does not react well when exposed for long periods. Kitchen cabinets near an oven may result in peeling. The material dents easily. Prolonged smoke exposure, like tobacco smoke, discolors the finish.
