How to Channel Water to a Drain Box

The gutters on a home are designed to catch the rainwater and melting snow that runs from the roof and direct the water away from your home. This prevents your home from flooding due to water pooling near your home. However, some gutters are positioned too close to the home, leaving the water near the foundation, where it can cause damage and seep into the basement. Installing a drain box helps prevent these issues.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a hole large enough to hold the drain box directly beneath the downspout on your home.

    • 2

Place the drain box into the hole so the grate on its top is level with the ground and it is in position to catch the water that comes out of the downspout.

    • 3

Dig a channel away from the drain box away from your home to lead the water away. The channel should run to the curb.

    • 4

Attach a drainage pipe to the drain box and cap off the remaining holes on the drain box. The end of the drainage pipe should stick out near the curb or in your ditch.

    • 5

Fill in the hole surrounding the drain box and over the drainage pipe with dirt. Cover the dirt with grass seed or sod to make your yard look like new.
