Removing Vinyl-Backed Stripes

Vinyl stripes are graphics used on cars and other vehicles. Often, these stripes are used as racing stripes on the hood or side of the car. These graphics adhere to the body of the vehicle with acrylic or latex adhesive. Often, even when you manage to peel the stripes away, the adhesive residue is left behind and it still outlines the vinyl graphic. Leftover adhesive is not only unattractive, but it also attracts dust and debris, which may then be difficult to remove.

Instructions

  1. Heat Tree Lamp

    • 1

Place the vehicle in the garage and close the garage door.

    • 2

Place a heat tree lamp 16 inches from the stripe if possible.

    • 3

Plug in the heat tree lamp and allow it to heat the vinyl adhesive stripe for several minutes. Then turn the heat tree lamp off.

    • 4

Pull off the stripe using your hand. Work quickly while the stripe is still warm.

    • 5

Spray adhesive remover, mineral spirits or rubbing alcohol on the leftover adhesive. Allow it to saturate the adhesive for 30 to 60 seconds.

    • 6

Scrape the adhesive off with a plastic scraper.

    • 7

Respray any leftover adhesive and wipe away with a paper towel until it's completely removed.

    Graphic Removal Gel

    • 8

Apply a graphic removal gel to the vinyl stripe with a paintbrush. Allow it to saturate the vinyl for at least three minutes or until the vinyl begins to wrinkle.

    • 9

Scrape the vinyl stripe from the surface with a plastic scraper.

    • 10

Apply more of the graphic remover or mineral spirits with the paintbrush, and allow it to saturate any leftover adhesive.

    • 11

Rub the adhesive away with a wet towel.
