How to Disassemble an Ice Maker on a Kenmore Side-by-Side

The Kenmore side-by-side series of refrigerators features a vertically oriented set of compartments, one for refrigeration and one for freezing. The freezer door features an ice dispenser that accesses and draws upon the ice maker assembly within the Kenmore's freezer compartment. Occasionally, this ice maker may falter and repairs may not be sufficient, resulting in the need to disassemble and remove the ice maker assembly. You can perform this task even if you lack familiarity with Kenmore refrigerator design.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the Kenmore refrigerator slightly away from the wall, just enough to access the rear of the appliance. Follow the trail of the water supply tube on the back of the Kenmore down to where it connects to the valve with a handle on it in the wall. This is the water shut-off valve. Rotate the valve's handle clockwise to turn off the water supply.

    • 2

Remove the Kenmore refrigerator's power cable from the wall outlet.

    • 3

Open the freezer door on the Kenmore refrigerator to access the ice maker assembly on the inside. Lift the ice tray up and out. It is not secured by any screws.

    • 4

Remove the screws securing the ice maker assembly within the Kenmore's freezer using a 1/4-inch hex screwdriver. Note that there will be several screws along the top and bottom of the ice maker to remove, although the exact number will vary depending upon the specific ice maker model you're disassembling.

Disconnect the ice maker's harness from the Kenmore freezer's harness. These two electrical harnesses are connected via each of their tabs. One harness extends out of the back of the ice maker, and the other extends out of the rear of the Kenmore's freezer. Push the tabs together to disengage their lock and separate the two harnesses.

Pull the Kenmore's ice maker out of the freezer.
