The Well Pump Is Running With No Pressure

If you run your home off a well, a lack of pressure needs to be repaired immediately to ensure you can live comfortably in the home. On the other hand, a garden or field dependent on an irrigation well with a pump that has no pressure will quickly dry out. The failure of one of several parts on a pump can cause it to lose pressure.
  1. Burst Pipe

    • If the draw pipe or a delivery pipe from your well has burst, all the water may be running out of the pipe before it reaches its destination. Listen at the well for the sound of running water. If you hear water splashing into the well below, there may be a burst pipe before it reaches the surface of the well. If you disconnect the output pipe from the pump and attach a short pipe or hose to it and water pumps out but you have no pressure in the house or garden, then a rupture along the pipe is the likeliest problem.

    Well Level

    • The rate at which a well fills up again after being pumped is known as its replenishment rate. Usually, this rate stays steady, however, sometimes the replenishment rate can decrease. This could mean that you are pumping the well faster than it can recover which could result in periods where no pressure occurs. If this happens, lower the pump deeper into the well to ensure constant water pressure.

    Primed System

    • If your well pump is a jet pump, if the pump isn't primed it will run but not draw any water into the system. This can happen if there is a leak in the system somewhere where the drive water leaks out and air gets caught in the system. A common place for this to happen is at a faulty check valve. This valve is designed to keep water in the system and prevents it from backflowing back into the well. A faulty check valve and an unprimed pump will certainly eliminate any water pressure.

    Broken Parts

    • Several parts on the pump itself can not operate properly and eliminate the water pressure without affecting the operation of the pump's motor. An inlet screen that gets completely plugged will stop the flow of water but not affect the motor. Impellers also wear out over time. If your impeller is worn out it won't generate the force that the pump needs to suck water up, but the motor will continue running as normal.
