How to Fill in a Crack in a Bathtub

Bathtubs sometimes crack when heavy items are dropped into them or when they are being moved. These cracks need to be repaired or they will open further and start to leak. You can fix cracks at home in less than a day as long as the cracks aren't too large or deep. Use the right kind of repair compound for the type of bathtub you have, such as fiberglass, enamel or porcelain. If the bathtub damage is extensive, it is better to call in a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand any rough spots in the crack with 100-grit sandpaper. Avoid sanding the porcelain or enamel surface of the tub to prevent scratches.

    • 2

Wet a rag with rubbing alcohol and wipe it over the scratch to get rid of the sanding dust and any residue. Give the tub a minute to dry before proceeding.

    • 3

Open the container of repair compound, depending on what your tub is made of. Pour some of the compound into a separate, clean container. Mix in a small amount of enamel hobby paint using a stir stick. Continue adding the paint to the compound until the color matches your bathtub.

    • 4

Put some of the mixture onto a small metal putty knife and use the knife to work the compound into the crack. If the crack is large, press the compound into the bottom first and build layers of compound on top of the initial layer to ensure it's solid.

    • 5

Scrape over the top of the crack with the putty knife to get a surface that is flush with the bathtub. Allow the compound to dry according to package instructions.

    • 6

Remove any excess compound by pouring nail polish remover on a cotton swab and cleaning around the edges of the crack. This works best after the compound is dry. Do not use the bathtub for at least eight hours so the compound can cure.
