How to Fix a Burnt Countertop With Epoxy Paint

No matter how careful you are with your countertops, accidents will happen. One such accident is burning your countertop. This is generally only a problem for laminate countertops, since unlike marble and granite, laminate is not heat resistant and will scorch, melt or burn when extreme heat is applied to its surface. It is possible to repair this damage -- but your level of success will depend on how severe the burn is and the surface pattern of the countertop.

Things You'll Need

  • Abrasive scrubbing powder
  • Steel wool
  • Fine-grit sandpaper
  • Paintbrush or roller
  • Cloth
  • Epoxy paint

Instructions

    • 1

Sprinkle the abrasive cleaning power onto the burn. Add A few drops of water and make a paste. Let the paste set for 1 to 2 minutes.

    • 2

Use the steel wool to scrub the burned surface with the paste. Continue to scrub the burn until it fades. The scrubbing time will depend on the depth and severity of the burn.

    • 3

Wipe the paste off the counter with a damp cloth. Allow the counter surface to dry.

    • 4

Sand the area with fine-grit sandpaper. This action will remove more of the burn and residue left over from the paste and steel wool. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and allow the surface to dry.

    • 5

Mix the epoxy paint per the paint's directions. Apply the paint to the burned area with a brush or roller, using even strokes. Allow the first coat to dry.

    • 6

Apply a second coat of epoxy paint. Allow the paint to dry completely before using the countertop.
