How to Fumigate Your Home Cheaply

If you would rather avoid the high cost of a professional exterminator, you can fumigate your home yourself. The key is to do it safely and effectively without incurring collateral damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase individual room foggers especially formulated for your particular problem. Ants, fleas, bedbugs and cockroaches are some of the common pests that people use bug bombs to eradicate. Check the canister to determine how much area each one covers and how many you will need to do your entire house.

    • 2

Prepare your home for fumigation. Double bag all food and pet food with airtight plastic bags as well as food in the refrigerator. Store all medications in airtight plastic bags. Remove houseplants from the home. Bag children's toys in large garbage bags and secure them.

    • 3

Open all cabinet and closet doors and drawers to allow the fog to penetrate these areas where bugs often hide.

    • 4

Extinguish live flames like the pilot light in your stove and hot water heater. Many pesticides are flammable and may cause an explosion when coming into contact with a flame. Read the canister of the pesticide to determine the appropriate steps to take.

    • 5

Prepare your family and pets to leave the home for the period of time indicated on the pesticide canister. It may be necessary to leave for 24 hours or so. Find an alternate place to stay overnight such as a hotel or a friend's or relative's home.

    • 6

Activate the pesticide canisters as the instructions indicate and leave the home immediately. Lock your doors on the way out and post signs if there is a possibility that anyone who has a key to your home may enter while fogging is occurring.
