How to Change Garage Door Wheels to the Nylon Rollers

The old metal garage door wheels attached to your garage door can become noisy as they age and can squeak along the track. Failure to lubricate the wheels on a regular basis can increase the noise as the garage door opens. Replacing the original steel wheels of your garage door with nylon rollers can reduce the noise and decrease the need for lubrication. When replacing the old garage door wheels with nylon rollers, begin with the bottom roller set and replace one set at a time, working your way up to the top set.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the garage door and brace the bottom of the door, so that the bottom wheels are located at a comfortable working height. Have an assistant help keep the door braced to avoid injury.

    • 2

Place vice grips on the edge of the garage door roller track. Slowly bend the curved edge of the metal track open to pull the current wheels from the track.

    • 3

Pull the bottom of the garage door toward you as your assistant keeps the door braced up and open. Slip the current garage door wheels from the brackets on the garage door. Thread the stems from the new nylon roller wheels into the brackets.

    • 4

Insert the new rollers into the roller track where you bent open the track. Lower the garage door to the floor and bend the track closed.

    • 5

Move up to the next set of wheels above the set you replaced. Use a socket and wrench to remove the brackets attached to the garage door.

    • 6

Pull the brackets away from the garage door and tilt the current roller out of the track. Slide the original garage door wheel from the bracket and thread the stem from the new nylon roller wheel into the bracket.

    • 7

Tilt the nylon wheel of the replacement roller to insert it into the track. Secure the bracket back onto the garage door using the bolts you removed previously. Continue to replace the garage door wheels with nylon rollers in the same manner until you reach the top rollers on the garage door.

    • 8

Remove the bolt securing the roller brackets to the top brackets on the garage door. The top brackets attach at a 90-degree angle to the top of the garage door. The roller brackets sit on top of the 90-degree angle brackets.

    • 9

Slide the roller brackets off the top of the 90-degree angle brackets. Tilt the brackets toward you to remove the original garage door wheel from the track.

    • 10

Thread the stem of the new nylon roller wheels through the roller brackets. Tilt the nylon wheels to insert them into the track.

    • 11

Place the roller brackets on top of the 90-degree angle brackets. Replace the bolt securing the roller brackets to the 90-degree angle brackets at the top of the garage door.
