Repairing Cracked Mortar Between Cinder Block

Cracked, damaged or missing mortar between cinder blocks is more than just an eyesore. Mortar is constructed from sand, lime or concrete and water, and is intended to seal the space between blocks, preventing the entrance of moisture. Repairing, or repointing, mortar is the most effective way to protect your cinder block wall from any further damage. The repair involves chipping away the damaged material and replacing it with fresh mortar.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the damaged, cracked or deteriorating mortar with a hammer and chisel. Set the chisel against the affected mortar and gently tap it with the hammer. Continue until all the damaged mortar is gone.

    • 2

Brush away the finer pieces of mortar, dirt and debris from between the cinder blocks with a small, stiff brush or a wire brush.

    • 3

Mix the mortar according to the package directions. Pour the powdered mortar into a plastic bucket and continue to add water until the finished product is stiff enough to be rolled into a ball.

    • 4

Fill the empty space between the cinder blocks with the mortar. Load a metal trowel with the mortar and begin to pack it into the space. Continue to pack the space with the mortar until it is completely full.

    • 5

Slip on a rubber glove and run your finger along the newly created seam to remove any excess mortar and create a smooth, finished appearance.

    • 6

Allow the mortar to cure for at least 48 to 72 hours before wiping away the excess product from the cinder blocks with a stiff-bristled brush.

    • 7

Rinse the cinder blocks with a garden hose to rinse away any finer pieces of loose mortar.
