How to Cut a Top Sheet for Your Snowboard

The top sheet of a snowboard is the very top layer of the board located just above the fiberglass layer. The top sheet is often painted or laminated with various colors and graphics, which distinguish one board from another and can be changed to customize the board. In order to add a new graphic layer or image, you need to replace the old top sheet, design a new graphic layer, then cut out the image and stick it to the board.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the snowboard thoroughly. If there are any stickers on the board, remove them with a razor blade or solvent such as mineral spirits. The mineral spirits will also take care of debris removal.

    • 2

Place a large piece of contact paper over the old top sheet, making sure to cover all edges. Smooth the contact paper out so that no bubbles form.

    • 3

Print out a design that fits your personal preference and style onto a sheet of laminate that is measured roughly to the dimensions of your snowboard. Because you will trim the laminate to make it fit exactly, try to size the layer slightly larger than the board.

    • 4

Lay the laminate down on top of the snowboard and, with a pencil or water-based pen, trace an outline of the snowboard.

    • 5

Cut the laminate with a pair of scissors so that it is exactly the size and shape of the snowboard.

    • 6

Stick mounting adhesive to the back of the laminate sheet, then press the sheet's sticky side down onto the top layer of the snowboard to create the new top sheet. Using a paint roller or a squeegee that comes with the mounting adhesive, make sure to smooth out all bubbles from the laminate sheet.

    • 7

Cut away any pieces that slightly overlap the board. You should be able to easily cut these pieces with a small razor blade knife. Do this carefully so that you do not cut into the top sheet or any other layer of the snowboard.

    • 8

Paint on a clear laminate paint layer onto the the top sheet and wait several days for the sheet to dry before using the board.
