How to Apply a V-Strip to a Sliding Window

Weather stripping is an important part of regulating the internal temperature of the home by preventing cold air from leaking into it and warm air from leaking out of it. One form of weather stripping is a V-strip, which is made of vinyl or metal. This weather stripping works well on the sides of sliding windows where they meet the window frame. When the widow closes, the V-shape compresses to seal up any existing gaps.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the sliding window, and push is back so that you can easily access the side frame where it closes.

    • 2

Spray the frame with window cleaner, and wipe the inside of the frame with a cloth to remove all dirt and dust from it, both of which which will prevent the V-strip from sticking properly to the frame.

    • 3

Measure the length of the window frame from top to bottom using a tape measure.

    • 4

Lay piece of V-strip on a table, and measure the same length, marking the location with a pencil.

    • 5

Cut the strip off at the pencil mark using scissors if it is vinyl, and using tin snips if it is metal.

    • 6

Peel off the protective backing from V-strips, and press the sticky back into place along the side of the window frame. If the V-strip is metal, place it against the frame and insert tack nails along the length of it using a hammer. Insert one nail through each perforated hole along the side of the strip.

Close the sliding window, and lock it to ensure that the strip does not interfere with the operation of the window.
