How to Cut a Natural Quartz Countertop

Quartz is a natural stone that develops when silica is exposed to oxygen. It has a semi-transparent coloring that includes white, clear, black, brown and purple. Although most quartz counter tops are cut to size by the manufacturer, you may need to trim a counter top to fit your installation area. Due to the extreme hardness of quartz, cutting through a quartz counter top requires a professional wet saw with a diamond cutting blade.

Things You'll Need

  • Wet saw
  • Garden hose or water container
  • Diamond-tipped cutting blade
  • Tape measure
  • Grease pencil
  • 2 sawhorses
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Earplugs

Instructions

    • 1

Set a wet saw in an outdoor location, and screw the end of a garden hose onto the end of the water inlet valve on the saw. Instead of a hose attachment, some wet saws have a tray that needs to be filled with water.

    • 2

Install a diamond-tipped cutting blade into the wet saw using the manufacturer’s instructions.

    • 3

Measure the width and length of the cabinets or other area where you want to install the quartz counter top.

    • 4

Mark the same width and length measurements on the quartz counter top using a grease pencil. The measurements are the cut lines. Place the quartz counter top on two sawhorses directly beside the wet saw. Due to the weight of the counter top, ask someone to help you with that task.

    • 5

Slide the quartz piece under the wet saw's blade until a grease penciled cut line is under the blade.

    • 6

Put on work gloves, safety glasses and earplugs, and turn on the wet saw. Lower the saw blade onto the quartz counter top, and cut through the cut lines.

An alternative to lowering the saw blade onto the quartz piece is to push the quartz piece against the blade, but the piece's weight may not make that option feasible.

    • 7

Turn off the wet saw, and remove the counter top from under the saw. Wipe the entire quartz counter with a cloth to remove all moisture. Install the counter top to check how it fits, and cut more of it with the wet saw if necessary.
