Replacing an Oven Top

Over time your oven top can get scratched and pitted, which may make you decide to replace it. This is surprisingly simpler than it may appear, as most ovens have tops that can pop off easily. Purchase a replacement oven top directly from your manufacturer. These replacement tops should come with more specific instructions for your exact brand and model, but most oven tops are installed in the same manner.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the heating elements and burner covers from the stove top if your machine is electric. Remove the grates if your oven is gas.

    • 2

Wedge a screwdriver in between the oven top lip and the front of the oven. Using the screwdriver, lift the oven top so that it unlocks from the oven. Be careful not to scratch the oven.

    • 3

Lift the oven on its back hinges and pull it toward you to remove it from the oven.

    • 4

Clean the area thoroughly with an all-purpose cleaning solution and a scrubbing brush. Take advantage of this opportunity to clean the oven and ensure that stains and dirt don’t make the oven less efficient.

    • 5

Slide the replacement top into the back of the oven top. This is usually easiest if you do it at an angle with the top of the stove. The thin piece of metal on the replacement top should fit into the thin slot on the back of the oven top. Press until the stove top has slid back as far as it can. This is generally only a few inches.

    • 6

Lower the replacement top over the oven and press it down hard. This will lock the stove top to the oven.
