Removing a Cast Iron Drain and Cleaning Out the Plug

Homes built before the 1970s and 1980s usually have old, cast iron sewer pipes -- unless the home has been renovated. If the pipes are cast iron then the drain plug at the end of the pipes is also cast iron. The plug is a cap that fits over the end of the pipe to allow access to the sewer line. You can remove the cast iron drain plug and clean it if needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply spray lubricant to the drain plug and allow it to sit for three to five minutes.

    • 2

Twist the drain plug cap off. If the cap is stuck, hit it with a hammer and use a wrench to loosen it.

    • 3

Run water over the drain plug to rinse it off. Use the steel wool to scrub the plug and remove any rust or built up dirt.

    • 4

Place the drain plug back on the end of the cast iron pipe and twist it in place with the wrench.
