How to Fix an Unglued Laminate Countertop

Laminate it an easy-to-clean surface for counters. It is durable and affordable, making it an ideal choice in many homes. But laminate can come unglued. This usually happens on the narrow edging along the sides of the counter, but it can happen on the top as well. This doesn't mean you need to replace your counter. Instead, fix it yourself using simple items found either at home or at your local home supply store.

Instructions

  1. Hot Iron

    • 1

Clean out any debris or gunk that has collected on the unglued section of laminate using a scraper, such as a metal butter knife.

    • 2

Heat an iron on a medium-high setting.

    • 3

Press the iron on top of the laminate pieces so it reactivates the existing glue and cements the pieces together.

    • 4

Check the laminate by trying to pull it up or move it. Allow it to cool once it is securely in place.

    Glue

    • 5

Scrape away any excess glue or debris that has formed on the underside of the laminate using a butter knife or other scraper.

    • 6

Apply a thin line of contact cement on each side of the rough laminate.

    • 7

Press the laminate in place and hold it while it dries. Use a clamp or weight to keep it in position. Allow it to cure according to the glue instructions before using it.
