How to Convert a Submersible Pond Pump to an External Pond Pump

The purpose of a pump is to transfer liquid from one location to another. In the case of a pond, the pumping of the water can also lead to both filtration and aeration. A submersible pump in a pond can be moved to an external location above ground and used there instead.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 plastic hoses, 5 feet long, 1 inch diameter
  • Duct tape
  • Bonding glue
  • Silicone sealant paste
  • 50-foot extension cord

Place the base of the submergible water pump face down on the ground next to the pond.

    • 2

Place an end of one of one of the plastic hoses over the outflow hole in the base. Secure the end to the base with strips of duct tape. Apply a line of bonding glue around the end of the hose where it meets the base. Let the glue set overnight.

    • 3

Apply a line of silicone sealant paste around the end of the hose where it meets the base. Let the paste set for six hours, then reapply another line of paste to the end of the hose. Let six hours pass before removing the duct tape.

Turn the base right-side up. Screw the intake column into the middle of the base. Place an end of a plastic hose over the intake hole on the column. Secure the end to the column with strips of duct tape. Apply a line of bonding glue around the end of the hose where it meets the column. Let the glue set overnight.
