Repair for Overhead Stove Fans

An overhead fan is a convenient item to have over a stove. Steam and heat from the stove are pulled up into the filter part of the fan and away from the kitchen. Over time, the moisture from the steam and the constant exposure to heat can cause the fan to malfunction. The most common problem on an overhead stove fan is that the switch fails. You can replace the switch using some common tools.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Switch off the circuit breaker that supplies the fan with power.

    • 2

Unfasten the screws that secure the switch to the main fan body. Usually there are two screws that you must remove. Use a Phillips screwdriver to turn the screws counterclockwise.

    • 3

Pull the switch down to expose the wiring.

    • 4

Cut the wires off the old switch using wire cutters. Cut the wires as close to the switch as you can to ensure you leave as much of the wiring as possible.

    • 5

Strip off an inch of the insulation from the end of the fan wires using wire strippers. The wires on the new switch will be pre-stripped.

    • 6

Hold together one wire from the switch with one wire from the fan and twist a wire nut onto the pair until it is snug. Repeat for the other pair of wires and stuff the wiring into the fan housing as you set the switch in place. Tighten the screws to secure the switch and restore the power.
