How to Keep Water in a Sump Pump Pipe From Freezing

Sump pipes are used to remove excess water from wet basements. It is critical that the sump pump pipes don't freeze, otherwise the water flows back into the basement. Freezing is more common in aboveground pipes, so keep yours warm and insulated to prevent freezing. Prevent an ongoing problem by having your pipes buried in the ground where they are more protected from the elements.

Instructions

    • 1

Lower the pipe where it exits from the sump pump by digging a trench for it or raising the sump pump. This helps gravity move the water along so it can't freeze.

    • 2

Lay straw under the pipe by cutting the straw bale open and spreading the straw under the pipe. This provides a layer of insulation and keeps the pipe off the ground.

    • 3

Wrap heating tape around the pipe and plug it in to keep the pipes warm. Heating tape costs little to install and run but is efficient at keeping the pipes warm enough to prevent freezing.

    • 4

Heap snow over the pipes when you have enough to cover it. Snow is insulating and helps protect the pipes.
