Identify the side of the shower than contains the door or the side through which you enter the shower area. This side represents the width of the shower.
Measure the side identified in Step 1 from the outer edge of the shower pan on one side of the shower to the outer edge of the pan on the opposite side or measure along the floor between the outer edges of the enclosing walls if there isn't a shower pan. This distance represents the external width of the shower base. Record the measurement.
Repeat the measurement across the top of the shower and record the distance. This is the top external width. If the two measurements differ, record the wider one as the maximum external width of the shower.
Measure the side identified in Step 1 between the inner edges of the shower pan or between the inner edge of one wall to the inner edge of the opposite wall. This distance represents the internal width of the shower base. Record the measurement.
Repeat the measurement across the top of the shower and record the distance. This is the top internal width. If the two measurements differ, record the wider one as the maximum internal width of the shower.
