How to Fix Fading Dye on a Formica Countertop

Formica laminate is a durable product used on surfaces such as tables, counters and cabinets. It can stand up to a lot of use but is susceptible to sun damage. The UV rays will fade or warp the Formica's color. This color change is impossible to reverse. However, you can fix the counters so they coordinate with your decor by painting them. Painting laminate is tricky because of the glossy, slick surface. However, the right products result in fresh color that can handle a lot of use.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the counter's surface with 120-grit sandpaper until the surface dulls and the shine is gone. Wipe it with a tack cloth to remove the sanding dust.

    • 2

Cover the counter in an epoxy primer using a sponge roller for the flat surfaces and a bristle brush for the edges. Let the primer cure according to package instructions before proceeding.

    • 3

Apply a two-part, water-based epoxy paint to the counters in the same manner as you applied the primer. Use a sponge roller and bristle paintbrush. Allow the paint to cure according to package instructions. Follow with a second coat. Finish the second coat by running the roller down the length of the counter in the same direction so the paint all lies the same way. This gives an even finish. Allow it to cure according to package instructions before using.
