Are There Any Quiet Chainsaws?

It’s impossible for a chainsaw to be completely quiet, but some are quieter than others. Battery-powered and electric chainsaws usually do not make enough noise to harm hearing unless they are used for sustained periods, such as more than three or four hours. More powerful gas-powered models are much noisier and should be used only with ear protection.
  1. Tradeoffs

    • Although battery-powered and electric chainsaws are usually quieter than gas-powered models, there is a disadvantage. Gasoline-powered chainsaws usually offer much more power. Gas-powered models can cut down trees, while less powerful chainsaws usually are reserved for light duty, such as trimming small branches and shrubs.

    Types

    • Gas-powered chainsaws are usually loudest because of their engine and noise from the exhaust muffler. Powerful gas chainsaws can be heard more than a block away. Electric and battery-powered motors feature small electric motors usually housed in a plastic case. The cases have vents to allow cooling for the motor, making loud exhaust systems unnecessary.

    Levels

    • Loud chainsaws can produce noise up to 100 decibels, compared to a jet plane taking off at 160 decibels. By comparison, hushed conversation in a study area at a library might register 40 decibels. Normal conversation reaches 60 decibels. Noise levels begin to hurt at about 130 decibels, according to the "Chicago Tribune." However, sustained use of a chainsaw at 100 decibels could also harm hearing. Harm to hearing is also possible with quieter chainsaws. Prolonged exposure to noise greater than 85 decibels can cause gradual hearing loss, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

    Protection

    • Ear protection, such as earplugs and earmuffs, reduces the noise of chainsaws to acceptable levels for the user. Some users of chainsaws elect to use earplugs and earmuffs. Used together, the plugs and muffs usually can make using any chainsaw safe. Ear protection is recommended with all chainsaws, and manufacturers might not post decibel ratings on the tools. Earplugs and muffs do carry a rating called a Noise Reduction Rating. The highest rating is 33. The higher the rating, the greater the level of protection.
