How to Cut Through a Fiberglass Shower to Install a Single Valve

Fiberglass shower panels typically require very little cutting to install them in the enclosure. However, installers do make cuts on the front panel wall to accommodate the shower valve. If your shower has a single valve, the process is less complex because you only measure and cut once instead of multiple times. You cut the hole with basic tools, but measure very carefully before starting since inaccurate cuts can require a total panel replacement.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Saw horses
  • Fiberglass shower panel
  • Dry erase marker
  • Safety glasses
  • Drill
  • 1-, 2- or 3-inch diameter hole saw

Instructions

    • 1

Step inside the shower and face the wall where the single valve is located. Measure from the rear corner over to the center of the valve. Write down the measurement and then repeat the measurement to ensure that you have an accurate number.

    • 2

Move the tape measure to the base of the shower wall where the bottom edge of the panel will eventually reside. Measure up to the center of the single valve and note the measurement. Repeat this measurement as well to ensure accuracy.

    • 3

Lay the fiberglass shower panel across two saw horses with the middle hanging freely.

    • 4

Measure from the right side to the first measurement you determined and mark the panel with a dry erase marker.

    • 5

Measure up from the bottom of the fiberglass panel to the second measurement you determined and ensure the two marks align.

    • 6

Protect your eyes by wearing safety glasses and measure the diameter of the valve base to determine the size of hole bit to use. Typically, the valve is 1, 2 or 3 inches in diameter. Install the proper sized bit into the saw.

    • 7

Position the hole bit over the center of the marker line and squeeze the trigger to cut all the way through the fiberglass shower panel.

    • 8

Set the saw aside and carry the panel to the shower enclosure. Place the panel up to the wall where the valve is located to ensure it fits perfectly over it.
