How to Install Nylon Pellet for Bolt Threading

An advance in fastener technology, nylon pellets mesh with bolts threads and, as the bolt is tightened, a strong hold is formed. Before nylon pellet technology, bolts were usually held in place with locking nuts and washers. Along with a higher cost, locking nuts and washers are not as effective as nylon pellets, which could be worked loose during heavy machinery operation. Nylon pellets for bolt threading can be purchased pre-installed into the bolt, or self-applied.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the threads. Using a wire brush, clean the threads of the bolt and the threaded area where it is inserted. This eliminates any burrs and dirt that can weaken the bond between the bolt and pellet.

    • 2

Place the nylon pellet on the threaded bolt shaft, about three threads up from the bottom. This allows the nylon to work its way up the threads as the bolt is installed.

    • 3

Tighten the bolt to any torque specifications as required. If there are no specific torque specs, tighten the bolt snug, without forcing it.
