How to Install a Country Kitchen Sink

A country kitchen sink has a large basin that takes up more space than a traditional sink. While a regular sink drops into the countertop and does not require any additional space in front, country kitchen sinks sit farther forward, taking up space where the cabinet would normally be. In order to install the sink you have to build a support structure between the cabinets and countertop where the cabinet will reside. This requires carpentry skills and additional building that is not common to normal sink installations.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the sink length and width. Cut away the countertop and cabinets, if applicable, with a reciprocal saw using these measurements. Remove the countertop and cabinet to accommodate the sink installation.

    • 2

Build the support system by creating a box frame frame with 2-by-4 boards and nails in the installation space. Leave room behind the frame for the water supply lines. Install a plywood top on the frame where the sink will rest and cut a hole in the center of the plywood with a jig saw for the drain line. Screw the plywood to the frame with wood screws and a power screwdriver.

    • 3

Set the sink on the frame supports to ensure it fits. If not, adjust the frame by adding wood to the top or by reducing the height of the frame. Trace along the edges of the sink on the countertop with a pencil. Remove the sink and tape off the area outside the trace lines with masking tape.

    • 4

Run silicone caulking inside the masked off area on the edges of the countertop. Set the sink back in place on the frame.

    • 5

Connect the drain pipe and p-trap to the sink by tightening the fittings on each with a wrench. Run the water supply hoses up behind the frame and to the base of the sink. Connect them to the faucet bases in the sink, after the faucet is installed.
