How to Fix Bumps Under Formica

Formica is so wonderfully maintenance-free that it can be jarring to see blemishes like bumps pop up -- seemingly out of nowhere. Most likely, the bump has occurred near a corner or a seam, because moisture may have penetrated the surface. If this is the case -- and the Formica is not rotted -- you can fix the bump yourself, after purchasing a few supplies from a home improvement store.

Things You'll Need

  • Putty knife
  • Lacquer thinner
  • Soft rags
  • Contact cement
  • Brush
  • Laminate roller

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the edge of the Formica with a putty knife -- slowly and carefully -- and then lift the Formica layer.

    • 2

Inspect the underside of the Formica layer. Use a wet cloth to remove any dust or dirt that may be causing bumps. Ask an assistant to help suspend the edge of the Formica while you work, if it is particularly stiff and unwieldy.

    • 3

Apply some lacquer thinner to a soft cloth. Wipe any laminate residue from the lower surface's top and from underneath the Formica layer. You want to create a perfectly clean slate from which to reseal the surface.

    • 4

Apply contact cement to the surface and the Formica with a brush. Let the cement dry, although it will still adhere once it reaches this state.

    • 5

Press the two pieces together firmly. Roll over the surface several times with a laminate roller to flatten the surface and erase the threat of future bubbles.

    • 6

Slide a soft rag or towel over the Formica to protect the surface. Then secure the edge of the Formica to the lower surface with a few evenly spaced clamps. Let it set for 24 hours, and remove the clamps.
