How to Remove a Door From Under a Stairway

Storage underneath a staircase can be handy for those household items that are not in use or are unsafe for children. Oftentimes, such storage areas are secured by a door. If you decide to have easier access to the storage area or want to open the area for other uses, you can remove the door.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the end of a flat-head screwdriver at the bottom of the pin that is inside of the bottom hinge. Hit the end of your screwdriver with a hammer, forcing the hinge pin above the top of the hinge. Place the end of your screwdriver in the crease at the top of the pin and strike the screwdriver again with the hammer. This will force the pin out of the hinge.

Repeat Step 1 with the rest of the hinges, moving from bottom to top. Have another person hold the door in place as you remove the pins.

    • 3

Lift the door away from the hinges. Unscrew the hardware around the doorway with either the flat-head screwdriver or Phillips screwdriver, depending on the type of screws.
