Can Fiberglass Bathtubs Be Fixed?

Bathtubs can be made from cast iron, marble, stainless steel, acrylic or fiberglass. Fiberglass bathtubs are lightweight and inexpensive. However, they are easily scratched and stained, and they can crack or develop holes. Replacing an old bathtub is difficult, and might even involve tearing out walls. Instead of replacing your old fiberglass bathtub, consider repairing it.
  1. Reglazing

    • The process of fixing a fiberglass bathtub is known as reglazing or refinishing. It involves the use of strong chemicals, and the technician doing the work needs to wear a respirator and protective suit. In addition, your bathroom will need to be vented to remove poisonous fumes. After preparing the bathroom and cleaning the tub, the technician will repair any holes. Holes as large as 1 or 2 inches wide and 6 inches long can be repaired. After spraying on two coats of epoxy, the refinisher will apply several coats of polyurethane finish, sanding the tub between each coat. Refinishing takes four to six hours and the tub can’t be used for at least 24 hours afterward.

    Appearance

    • Reglazed bathtubs look like new, if properly done by a knowledgeable worker. Do-it-yourself kits are also available, but they don’t contain the professional-strength bonding agents that professional refinishers rely on. The paints and epoxies available in do-it-yourself kits aren’t as durable as professional products either. A professionally done refinished bathtub should last five to 15 years, but do-it-yourself refinishing kits often fail within a year. It can also be hard for homeowners to apply the finish evenly, which causes a rough appearance.

    Cost

    • Refinishing costs vary, depending on the size of the bathtub. As of the date of publication, you could refinish a standard, white, 5-foot bathtub for $350 to $450 and a nonstandard size tub for about $12 per square foot. Colored tubs cost more as do tubs that need repairs. Warranties vary from three to 10 years, with many companies offering a five-year warranty.

    Maintenance

    • Don’t use abrasive cleaners, bleach, steel wool or abrasive pads on your newly refinished bathtub because they will ruin the finish. Clean your bathtub with a gentle spray on cleaner and a washcloth. Avoid bath mats with suction cups that will tear the coating on your tub. You can use a urethane polish to wax your tub every six months, but be careful not to slip in the tub when using it.
