How To: Cracked PVC Shower

A PVC, or poly-vinyl chloride, bathtub liner is an inexpensive material constructed from a synthetic vinyl resin. It's an economical and easy-to-install alternative to ceramic and cast iron, but is vulnerable to cracks and breakage. If left untreated, water penetrates the crack, causing it to spread until a professional is required to repair or replace the PVC liner. Before this happens, fix the crack quickly yourself with vinyl repair putty that's available at hardware and home improvement stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the area around the crack with a commercial bathroom cleaner. Wipe away the cleaner with a soft cloth or paper towel.

    • 2

Roughen the area surrounding the PVC crack with fine-grit sandpaper. This allows the vinyl repair putty to adhere better.

    • 3

Remove the rough edges around the crack with damp #0000 steel wool. Continue to gently work at the frayed edges until a smooth surface is created. Wipe down the crack with a tack cloth to remove any sanding dust.

    • 4

Purchase the vinyl repair putty at a hardware or home improvement store. Prepare the putty according to the package directions. Depending on the manufacturer, the procedure involves mixing a hardener with an epoxy that must be applied within 10 minutes, as the product begins to cure quickly.

    • 5

Apply the vinyl repair putty to the crack with a putty knife. Load the product on the putty knife and scrape it over the crack. Work the repair putty into the crack with the putty knife’s edge. Remove any excess putty immediately with a damp cloth.

    • 6

Allow the putty to cure according to package directions. Sand down the excess putty from the crack with fine-grit sandpaper until it's flush with the surrounding surface.

    • 7

Wipe down the tub with a tack cloth to remove the sanding dust.
