How to Adjust the Garage Door Yourself When the Cable is Broken

A garage door that has a broken cable can be adjusted manually without the need for costly professional repairs. You can open or shut a malfunctioning garage door that has lost use of its motorized function due to its cable even if you have never attempted garage door troubleshooting and repair previously. This is accomplished with the emergency release rope that is included with your garage door assembly.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the red emergency release rope if the garage door cable has broken. This release rope hangs from the assembly overhead in your garage.

    • 2

Pull downward on the emergency rope to release the motorized functions of the garage door. This will deactivate the motor entirely and allow for manual opening and closing of the door without resistance.

    • 3

Approach the garage door and find its inner handle. Hold onto this handle and pull it up to open the door manually.

    • 4

Grab the inner handle and slowly "walk" the door down in order to close it. You must be careful not to pull down too quickly on the door, otherwise you risk damage. Since the door no longer has power, it will fall naturally due to gravity once you start pulling it down, so take care to control its descent to avoid doing any damage.
