Bosch Dishwasher Is Making a Squealing Noise

Company engineers have designed Bosch dishwashers -- equipped with a two-pump motor system, triple insulation and a suspension motor -- to be water-saving, energy-efficient and exceptionally quiet kitchen appliances. Bosch dishwashers are dependable and normally trouble-free. With time and use, a problem may develop. If your Bosch dishwasher is making a squealing noise when operating, a few troubleshooting steps may resolve the problem before you incur the expense of calling a service technician.
  1. Empty the Dishwasher

    • Empty the dishwasher of all dishes and flatware. The dishwasher may have been loaded in a manner that kept the arm from turning or a piece of flatware may have fallen to the bottom of the dishwasher. Test the arms of the dishwasher to determine whether they spin freely before replacing the racks and reloading the dishwasher.

    Clean the Arm

    • Food, chipped glass or other debris may be preventing the dishwasher arms from spinning freely. If the arms are stuck, the dishwasher may produce a squealing noise as the motor attempts to force them to move. If the dishwasher arm is stuck, remove the arm and clean the arm and the arm mount carefully. Replace the arm and rotate the arm to determine whether it is operating properly. If this does not fix the problem, the arm may be bent or broken and you may need a replacement part.

    Clean the Drains

    • Clean the filters and drains of the dishwasher; food or other debris may be clogging them. The noise you hear may be the drain pump's attempting to engage and not being able to work because the drain is clogged.

    Reposition the Wash Load

    • Pots, pans or dishes may be improperly loaded in the dishwasher racks and making noise by rubbing against each other. Reposition the wash load to see whether that eliminates the squealing or squeaking noise.

    Safety Recall

    • On January 15, 2009, Bosch home appliances and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of 476,5000 Bosch dishwashers due to a danger of fire from an electrical component that can overheat. Recalled models were manufactured between May 1999 and July 2005. Consumers were advised to immediately stop using the machine until the danger is repaired. Contact your Bosch appliance dealer or call the firm’s recall hotline to determine whether your unit is affected.
